At Smooth Mooove, moving isn’t just about boxes and trucks—it’s about people, stories, and legacy. Our roots reach back more than a century to one determined man in Atlanta, Georgia: Luke Wellmaker, the first known African American mover in the city. His courage, work ethic, and commitment to serving others laid the foundation for everything we do today.

It All Began with Luke Wellmaker

In 1859, Luke Wellmaker was born into a world where opportunities for Black entrepreneurs were scarce and hard-won. Yet, through perseverance and vision, he built something extraordinary.

Around 1900, Luke started his own moving company in Atlanta. At a time when segregation and systemic barriers made business ownership incredibly difficult, Luke’s success was a powerful statement of resilience. He didn’t just move furniture—he moved families, hopes, and futures.

Luke’s work was about more than making a living. It was about:

  • Dignity – Treating every customer’s belongings with care and respect
  • Trust – Being the person families could rely on during stressful transitions
  • Community – Providing a needed service to neighbors and building a reputation for honesty and hard work

His example planted a seed of entrepreneurship and service that would live on for generations.

A Legacy Carried Through Generations

Luke and his wife, Charlotte Wellmaker, raised a family rooted in faith, perseverance, and service. Over time, their descendants carried those values into their own lives and careers.

One of those descendants is Luke’s great-granddaughter, Adrienne Peppler. Growing up, Adrienne heard stories of Luke’s dedication and strength. Those stories became part of her identity—and ultimately helped shape her life’s work.

Adrienne saw the same thing Luke did over 100 years ago: that moving is more than a transaction. It is a deeply personal moment of change.

 

From Family Story to Modern Service: The Birth of Smooth Mooove

Inspired by her great-grandfather’s path, Adrienne founded Smooth Mooove Senior Relocation Services in the Atlanta area. While the city has changed dramatically since Luke’s time, the heart of the work remains the same: serving people with care, respect, and integrity.

Smooth Mooove was created to meet a growing need—helping older adults and their families navigate the emotional and practical challenges of moving. Adrienne recognized that seniors face unique questions:

  • What do I keep, donate, and give away?
  • How will I manage all the sorting, packing, and coordination?
  • Who can I trust with my memories and my home?

 

Smooth Mooove answers those questions with a full-service, compassionate approach to senior moves, carrying Luke’s legacy into the 21st century.

Today, our team honors Luke’s spirit through:

 

  • Hands-on help with sorting, downsizing, and organizing
  • Careful packing and moving of cherished belongings
  • Thoughtful unpacking and set-up in the new home, so it feels familiar and comfortable including memory placement
  • Coordination and communication with families, communities, and service providers
